Social life in Germany is, as in any other place, what you make it. Individual small groups form from skills of those stationed in the area or groups form from shared interests.

There has always been a phrase amongst single soldiers that they live the life of a ‘warrior monk’ due to the language barriers and an inability to communicate with, in particular, local ladies. This is not so bad now as English has become compulsory in German schools…now the language barrier is probably an excuse!

The closing of shops and various German laws at weekends and afternoons mean that you can become very inventive in your social activities – meeting with friends, water skiing, the pubs and the various festivals.
